Eight Rowers Earn IRA All-Academic Honors

CENTERVILLE, Mass. – A total of eight Columbia men’s rowers (seven heavyweight, one lightweight) received 2014 Intercollegiate Rowing Association (IRA) All-Academic distinction, as announced by the IRA Board of Stewards.

The seven heavyweight oarsmen honored were Clemens Auersperg, Alex Barkume, Ben Coombs, John Clapp, Emmett Gross, Sam Harris, Elliot Meade. Anders Smedsrud earned the honor for the second consecutive season, representing the lightweight program.

A total of 253 student-athletes from 28 institutions were honored, with Penn leading the way with the most heavyweight student-athletes honored (16) and Dartmouth and Princeton tying with MIT with the most lightweight student-athletes (8) recognized.

For a student-athlete to be eligible, he or she must be at least a sophomore in standing and completed one full year at his or her respective institution; maintain a cumulative grade point average of 3.35 or higher; earn an institutional letter; compete at the 2014 Intercollegiate Rowing Association Regatta.
