PENNSAUKEN, N.J. -- Although it was coming off a successful showing at the EARC Sprints Regatta, the Columbia women's rowing team was unable to place at the 2014 Ivy League Championships Sunday, proof that the Ivy League is indeed one of the strongest rowing conferences in the nation.
Finishing fourth in their opening heats in all three events they entered, the Lions were relegated to the Petite Finals in each. They finished within 1.7 seconds of Cornell in the second varsity eights Petite, and 4.3 seconds behind Penn in the varsity eights Petite. The varsity four, comprised of several rowing newcomers, finished well back in its Petite Final.
"The top Ivy League crews have more power," head coach Scott Ramsey said. "Our crews simply did not have the gas to go with the field in the second thousand meters."
Ramsey was upset with his teams' places, but not with his teams. Definitely not.
"I’m very proud of how ours crews competed today," he said. "They all went out to race to the best of their abilities. Their preparation for Ivies the past two weeks was the best we’ve seen from them all season."
Despite the lack of success, Ramsey felt his crew would benefit from the Ivy Championships.
"This was a learning experience," he explained. "We gained valuable racing experience competing in championships over the past two weekends. Our lack of success at these regattas makes it clear how much harder we need to prepare for next year. The team needs to dedicate the summer to achieving more power."
"I am confident they will come back in the fall having learned from this year and be ready to go for the 2015 season."
