Women's Rowing Hosts Yale and Penn for Connell Cup at Orchard Beach on Saturday

NEW YORK - The Columbia women's rowing team will begin the northern part of its schedule this Saturday, March 24 at the Orchard Beach Lagoon at 12:30 p.m. when Columbia will compete with Yale and Penn for the Connell Cup.

For Saturday's race, there will be a fan bus departing from Columbia's campus (116th Street and Amsterdam Avenue) at 10 a.m. and departing Glen Island at 3 p.m.

Last week, Columbia swept its races at the Governor's Cup in Florida. The women won each of their four races. The varsity eight defeated the host, Florida Tech, by 35 seconds, while the second varsity eight triumphed over Barry University by 17 seconds.
   
Columbia won the A fours by 38 seconds over Barry, and the B fours by equally-impressive margins over two shells from Nova Southeastern.

Here are directions to Orchard Beach and Glen Island Park for Saturday's race:

Directions to launching site at Glen Island:

From South via GW Bridge:
George Washington Bridge to Cross Bronx Expressway. Follow signs for the Bruckner Expressway North towards New England. Go through the Bruckner interchange to I-95. Take the City Island/Orchard Beach exit. Follow over bridge through the stop light. Go to the traffic circle and proceed ¾ around traffic circle to Shore Road North. Follow Shore road approximately 2.5 miles to Weyman Road. Take a right at this light and follow signs to Glen Island Park. Go over bridge onto Glen Island and park trailers in the first lot to the right near the castle.

From New Haven and North:
Take I95 to exit 15 (Pelham / New Rochelle / Route 1). Turn left on to Route 1 towards New Rochelle. At Home Depot, turn right on to Weyman Avenue. Follow Weyman across Pelham road towards Glen Island. Go over the bridge and bear right into the parking lot near the castle.

Directions to Finish line at Orchard Beach:

From South via GW Bridge:

Take the City Island/Orchard Beach exit. Follow over bridge through the stop light. Go to the traffic circle and proceed ¼ around traffic circle following signs for Orchard Beach. Go approximately ½ mile and bear left towards Orchard Beach. Please park in the large lot and walk to the finish area. DO NOT PARK ALONG THE GUARDRAIL. YOU WILL BE TICKETED BY PARK POLICE.

From New Haven and North:

Take I-95 to exit 15 (Pelham / New Rochelle / Route 1). Turn left on to Route 1 towards New Rochelle. At Home Depot, turn right on to Weyman Avenue. Follow Weyman Avenue to Pelham road and go right. Follow Pelham road approximately two miles to a roundabout. Go ¾ around the roundabout and follow signs to Orchard Beach. Go approximately ½ mile and bear left towards Orchard Beach.

IMPORTANT: DO NOT PARK ALONG THE GUARDRAIL, AS YOU WILL BE TICKETED BY PARK POLICE.

By Train:

Metro North New Haven Line from Grand Central Station to second Pelham stop. Taxi service is available to Travers Island (New York Athletic Club Boathouse) and/or to the finish line viewing area (opposite the Orchard Beach parking lot).

By New York City Subway:

IRT Lexington Avenue line. Take the 5 or 6 train to the end of the line. Taxi service is available from there to Travers Island (New York Athletic Club Boathouse) and/or finish line viewing area (opposite Orchard Beach parking lot).
