NEW YORK – The Columbia women's rowing team will take to its home course on Orchard Beach Lagoon in Pelham, N.Y. this weekend in its lone home weekend of the spirng season.

On Saturday, April 2, Columbia will take on Bucknell beginning at 11:10 a.m. and on Sunday, April 3, the Lions will seek to maintain their hold on the Woodbury Cup, racing against Northeastern beginning at 11:35 a.m.

The Woodbury Cup, the first ever inaugurated by Columbia women's rowing, was dedicated in 2005 in honor of the late Melanie Woodbury, a 1996 Barnard College graduate from Bonners Ferry, Idaho, who served as co-captain of the 1996 varsity women's team.  It was founded in a joint effort headed by Maggie Sullivan '96BC, Melanie's fellow co-captain, MB Blanding, her coach at Columbia and Jim Weinstein '84, co-chair of the Rowing Alumni Advisory Committee.

"Every year, I'm excited about the race, whether I'm able to attend or not," said Sullivan, who will drive down from her home in Boston for this Sunday's race.  "This Cup race is so laden with meaning for me, that it can't not be a focal point of the spring racing season."

Columbia delighted its alumni last season by reclaiming the Woodbury Cup from Northeastern, winning the Cup race and the six-team Beanpot Regatta to finish its regular season last May.  Not only was it a great ending to Columbia's regular season, it was a fitting tribute to Melanie Woodbury and her teammates.

"We realize that [the Woodbury Cup] is more than a rowing race," head coach Melanie Onufrieff said. "Winning the Cup is what we're after, but we're doing it for something that's a big part of our program's family."

Both races can be heard live online and streamed to the web.  Fans can also listen to the races on their phones by calling 202-481-6883.  Please note the changed number is different than what was posted earlier in this space.
