NEW YORK - Fresh off its strong performance against FIT and Jacksonville last week at the Governor's Cup on Canal 54, the Columbia women's rowing team will take on Ivy League foes Penn and Yale for the Connell Cup on Saturday, March 30 on the Schuylkill River in Philadelphia.
The women's teams swept five of five races at the Governor's Cup, defeating Jacksonville by more than 30 seconds, and FIT by 48 seconds. The Columbia 2V also rowed in the latter race, topping FIT by 37 seconds.
Last season, Columbia stayed with the favored Bulldogs right down to the final meters before losing by just four seats. Penn was four more seats back in third, producing one of the tightest finishes the Orchard Beach Lagoon has seen in years.
The Lions held a slim lead, no greater than two seats, through the first 1000 meters until Yale made strong push to pull ahead. After falling behind Penn, Columbia came up with one last burst with about 500 meters to go to overtake the Quakers, but could not catch the Bulldogs.
Penn is providing live audio of the event that can be heard here.
