Overpeck's gusts were quite in evidence again this Saturday, April 20, but so was Columbia's ability to overcome them.
Although the Lions were forced to fight through 20 miles per hour crossing winds against Bucknell, "They handled it well," head women's coach Scott Ramsey said. "The crossing winds were tough on the coxswains, but they had no impact on the outcome of the racing."
Bucknell had been enjoying a solid spring season, with a narrow victory over Penn's first varsity eight, and a victory in the Knecht Cup last week. But the Lion first varsity eight fought its way out to a one- length lead after the initial 400 meters yesterday, and continued to extend it through the entire the 2000-meter race. Although the Bison battled, they were never really able to challenge Columbia.
Ramsey and his staff had taken advantage of Columbia's two-week hiatus from rowing to implement many changes in the second varsity eights lineup. Despite the adjustments, Columbia, "had a great week of practice," Ramsey noted, and was able to execute the race plan.
The Lions will have to execute the race plans next week, when the Lions travel to Brown's home course, the Seekonk River, for the Dunn Bowl regatta among the Lions, Bears, and Big Red. As an adjunct to today's races, the Bucknell women's lightweight rowed two races against Georgetown.
