NEW YORK - Columbia senior Adam Powell finished day one at the 2011 NCAA Men's Swimming National Championships in Minneapolis, Minn., Thursday, as he came in eighth in the consolation final of the 50 free, and 16th overall. Powell will earn Honorable Mention All-America for his efforts. He swims in the 100 free Saturday.
Powell qualified for the consolation finals after swimming 19.55 seconds in the morning's preliminaries, a lifetime best, and a new Columbia school record. In the night session, Powell swam 19.74, which was good for eighth in his heat and 16th in the nation. Powell, along with the other seven athletes in the consolation finals, will earn Honorable Mention All-America.
Powell will now focus on the 100 free, which he is also swimming in this weekend. Preliminaries of that event will take place on Saturday, March 26. The day's session begins at 12 p.m.
