Men's Swimming Moves to Second Place in Day Two of Big Al Invitational

Day Two Results

NEW YORK - After day two of the Big Al Invitational in Princeton, N.J., the Columbia men's swimming & diving team, still maintains a second place standing out of eight teams. To begin the second day, the Lions were sparked by the third place finish of the men's 200 freestyle relay squad of first-year Omar Arafa, sophomore Matt Swallow, first-year David Jakl and junior John Wright. The team placed a time of 1:33.21 in the championship final. A fifth place finish by the squad of first-year Michael Fox-Moles, first year Stanley Wong, sophomore Kai Schultz, and sophomore Daniel Tan would earn the Lions points, finishing in the time of 1:34.34.

First-year Stephen Raynes and sophomore Harry Stephenson both placed in the top ten of the men's 400. Raynes finished with a championship finals time of 4:02.78, and Stephenson placed seventh with a championship finals time of 4:06.62.

Keeping the consistency going for the lions in the men's 100 yard butterfly was Jakl. Placing third in the 'A final' with a time of 49.65. Schultz would qualify for the 'B final' placing 10th overall with a time of 51.42.

The swimming sessions of the day would end with the 800 medley relay. The Lions were led by a fifth place finish by the squad of Jakl, Arafa, Tan, and sophomore Eric Traub, with a time of 1:42.01. A sixth place overall finish, with a time of 1:45.42, by the squad of sophomore Nathan Yueh, first-year Chester Dols, Wright, and junior Patrick Dougherty would help solidify Columbia's second place team finish.

Junior diver Jason Collazo had a strong day for the Lions, taking third in the men's 1m diving competition, tallying a championship finals 311.15 points. Columbia finished the day with a team total of 453 points.

The final day of the Big Al Invitational will be Sunday, December 4th with preliminaries in the morning at 11 a.m.
