Men's Swimming Caps Big Al Invitational With Second Place Finish

Day Three Results

PRINCETON, N.J. - The Big Al Invitational came to a head today in Princeton, N.J., with the Columbia men's swimming and diving team taking second place with 691 points. The team would finish in front of Brown, Rider, Villanova, Virginia, United States Military Academy and Drexel. Princeton won the Big Al Invitational tallying 1103.5 points.

The third day would prove to be the best showing for the Lions beginning with sophomore Harry Stephenson, who placed second in the men's 1650 yard freestyle with a time of 16:00.94. Three Columbia swimmers rounded out the top ten including first-year Stephen Raynes who came in at 16:04.76 to take fourth place. First-year Chester Dols posted a time of 16:17.76 to take sixth place and first-year Sam Dunkle posted a time of 16:34.15 to place ninth.

The Lions were led by first-year Jeremie DeZwirek in the men 200 yard backstroke who took fourth place in the A final with a time of 1:50.06. First-year David Jakl earned points for the Lions, taking a seventh place finish with a time of 1:55.39.

Jakl continued his strong showing at the Invitational with a second place finshi in the A final of the men's 200 yard butterfly, posting a time of 1:50.02. Sophomore Philipp Gaissert would take ninth in the event with a time of 1:52.85.

Columbia's consistency in the men's 400 yard freestyle relay continued in the final day. The squad of sophomore Daniel Tan, first-year Omar Arafa, Jakl, and sophomore Eric Traub took a fourth place finish posting a time of 3:04.40. Placing seventh for the Lions with a time of 3:10.16 was the squad of first-year Stanley Wong, first-year Alex Ngan, first-year Daniel Gosek, and junior John Wright.

Look for the Columbia men's swimming and diving team when they return home on Saturday, Dec. 10 to face Ivy League foe Harvard.
