Men's Swimming and Diving Bounces Back To Beat Dartmouth After Princeton Loss
NEW YORK - The Columbia men's swimming and diving team faced two Ivy League opponents in two days this weekend to cap the regular season. On Friday, Feb. 10 Columbia traveled to league leading Princeton. The Tigers remained undefeated on the year defeating the Lions 172-120. The first-year class highlighted the meet for the Lions earning three of the four Columbia wins.
First-year Alex Ngan took the first win for the Lions in the 50 yard freestyle with a time of 20.86. First-year Micah Rembrandt added a win in the 1 meter diving event tallying 301.64 points. Sophomore Eric Traub followed with a win in the 200 yard IM hitting the wall at 1:53.79. The squad of first-years Daniel Gosek, Omar Arafa, David Jakl, and Ngan went on to take the 200 yard freestyle relay with a winning time of 1:24.06.
Columbia returned home on Saturday, Feb. 11 to host Dartmouth in their final home meet of the season. The Lions bounced back with a 174-123 win over the Big Green led in part by junior Jason Collazo who won the 3 meter diving event with 321.45 points and the 1 meter diving event with 303.83 points.
The squad of Arafa, first-year Staney Wong, senior Bruno Esquen, and junior John Wright set a winning pace for the Lions taking the 200 yard medley relay with a time of 1:32.46. In a close second was the squad of first-year Michael Fox-Moles, sophomore Matthew Swallow, sophomore Kai Schultz, and Alex Ngan with a time of 1:32.83.
First-year Dominik Koll followed with a win in the 1000 yard freestyle with a time of 9:27.00. David Jakl added a win in the 200 yard freestyle with a time of 1:40.55 and Arafa continued a strong weekend with a first place finish in the 100 yard backstroke with a time of 50.60.
The Lions took the top three spots in the 100 yard breaststroke led by Matt Swallow who finished first with a time of 57.64. Sophomore Eric Traub placed second at 58.11 and sophomore Andrew Wood came in third at 59.04.
First-year Daniel Gosek kept the pace going in the 50 yard freestyle with a winning time of 20.75. Sophomore Daniel Tan aided the Lions with a first place finish in the 100 yard freestyle with a time of 46.33. A win in the 200 yard backstroke by Jeremie DeZwirek followed with a time of 1:49.34 and Kai Schultz took the 100 yard butterfly with a time of 56.77.
The first-year squad of Stanley Wong, William Falk-Wallace, Gosek, and Ngan capped the meet setting a Uris Pool record in the 200 freestyle relay with a time of 1:22.07. The previous record at 1:22.52 was set by Hyun Lee, Wright, Tan, and Adam Powell last season.
Columbia honored seniors Chester Dols, Robert Eyckmans, John-Howard Sidman, and Alex Smith who swam in their last meet in Uris Pool. The Lions finish the regular season with a 7-4 overall record and 4-4 in Ivy League play.
The Lions will head back to Princeton, N.J. from Thursday, March 1st - Sunday, March 3rd for the Ivy League Championships for their next meet.
