Arafa Captures Ivy League Title To Pace Lions In Day Two Of The Ivy League Championships

Day Two Results

PRINCETON, N.J. - The Columbia men's swimming and diving team gained momentum in day two of the Ivy League Championships on Friday, March 2 to finish third with 715.5 points, after beginning the day in fifth place. The Lions were led by first-year Omar Arafa who captured an Ivy League title in the 100 backstroke hitting the wall with a NCAA 'B' cut time of 47.35.

Columbia began the day with a fourth place finish in the 200 yard medley. The team of Arafa, first-year Stanley Wong, senior Bruno Esquen, and first-year Daniel Gosek finished with a NCAA 'B' cut time of 1:29.57. First-year Jeremie DeZwirek kept up the pace in the 1000 yard freestyle, finishing with a fourth place time of 9:08.50

The depth of the Lions in the 400 yard IM fared well behind a strong swim from senior Robert Eyckmans who took second place in the championship final with a NCAA 'B' cut time of 3:51.11. First-year Stephen Raynes and sophomore Harry Stephenson took the top two spots in the 'B' final of the event to tally points for Columbia. Raynes posted a time of 3:57.34 and Stephenson followed with a time of 3:58.54.

First-year David Jakl added points with a first place finish in the 'B' final of the 100 yard butterfly. Esquen powered in behind with a fourth place finish at 48.88. First-year Alex Ngan also finished first in the consolation finals with a time of 49.31. Another NCAA 'B' cut time in the 200 yard freestyle by first-year Dominik Koll kept the Lions' run going with a fifth place finish.

The 100 breaststroke was one of the best events for Columbia on the day. Eyckmans led the way with a fourth place finish in the championship final with a NCAA 'B' cut time of 55:08. Wong followed with a first place finish in the 'B' final with a time of 56.03. Sophomore Matthew Swallow took first in the consolation final with a time of 56.33 and Andrew Wood came in with a second place finish time of 56.97.

The Lions capped day two with a third place finish in the 800 yard freestyle relay. The team of Jakl, Arafa, junior John Wright, and Koll posted a NCAA 'B' cut time of 6:29.72. Columbia finished the day in third place and will look to continue their push to an Ivy League title in the final day on Saturday, March 4.
