NEW YORK - The Columbia men's swimming team competed in the ECAC Championships this weekend in Cambridge, Mass., at Harvard's Blodgett Pool. The Lions posted a number of strong performances, including three individual wins by Alex Ngan, to claim a fifth overall team finish in the 27 team field.
On the first day of the championships, Columbia had solid showings highlighted by a victory in the 50 freestyle by Alex Ngan. The sophomore clocked in with a first-place time of 20.28 in the event. The Lions also grabbed runner-up finishes in two relays. The 200 free relay squad of Ngan, Matthew Swallow, Patrick Dougherty and Daniel Tan finished with a time of 1:21.90. The quartet went on to combine for a second place time of 3:17.67 in the 400 medley relay on the day as well.
Saturday's action saw a flurry of Lions perform well in championship finals. The 200 medley relay led off the night with a fifth place finish, as Dougherty, Andrew Wood, Ngan and Swallow hit the wall in 1:31.59. Sam Dunkle shined in the 400 IM with a third place finish in 3:58.67. Alex Ngan best performance of the night came in the 100 butterfly. He won the event in a time of 48.39 for his second title of the meet.
The Lions posted two swimmers in the championship heat of the 200 freestyle as Daniel Tan finished fifth overall (1:40.26), while Joseph Beutler came in seventh in 1:40.92. The 100 breast saw a solid stroke from Wood who came in fifth overall with a time of 56.15. Doughery added a sixth overall finish in the 100 backstroke at 50.13 and the foursome of Tyler Mattingly, John Santoro, Beutler and Tan clocked in for a third place time of 6:43.76 in the 800 freestyle relay.
In the final day of action, Dunkle returned to start the day with a fourth place time of 15:48.55 in the 1650 freestyle. Dougherty followed in the 200 backstroke to grab fourth place with a time 1:49.50. Ngan captured his third individual victory of the meet in the 100 freestyle, clocking in at 44.61. Tan finished just behind Ngan in fourth place with a time of 45.63 in the event.
Wood claimed a top four finish in the 200 breaststroke at 2:02.58 and John Santoro took sixth in the event at 2:03.38. The Lions capped the meet with a runner-up finish in the 400 freestyle relay, as the squad of Ngan, Tan, Dougherty and Beutler posted NCAA 'B' cut time of 3:00.56.
Up next for Columbia is the 2013 Ivy League Championships, which will take place in Providence, R.I. on Thursday, March 7 - Saturday, March 9.
