NEW YORK - On an action pack day in Dodge Fitness Center on the campus of Columbia University, the Columbia men's swimming and diving team will open the season on Friday, Nov. 9 hosting Ivy League opponent Penn in Uris Pool at 5 p.m. The Lions will open the season facing the Quakers for the fourth consecutive season. Since the 2008-09 season, Columbia has emerged victorious three out of the four meetings, including the last two.

The 2011-12 season began with a 154-146 win at Penn, the first of seven wins on the year. The Lions posted a 7-4, 4-3 Ivy League, regular season record on their way to a third place finish in the 2012 Ivy League Championships. At the championship meet in Princeton, Columbia grabbed two Ivy League titles in the 100 back and 200 back, and seven swimmers earned All-Ivy League honors.

Columbia will return four of those seven All-Ivy League swimmers for the upcoming 2012-13 season. Anchored by the leadership of head coach Jim Bolster in his 29th season, head coach of diving Gordon Spencer in his 30th season, senior captains John Wright, Jason Collazo, and Patrick Dougherty, the Lions are poised for a run at an Ivy League Championship.

Columbia Key Returners

Omar Arafa, Sophomore

- Won the 2012 Ivy League title in the 100 back.

- 2012 second-team All-Ivy League honors in the 200 back.

- 2012 second-team All-Ivy League honors as a member of the 400 free relay squad.

- Earned Mid-Major All-American Honors.

David Jakl, Sophomore

- Picked up five wins against four Ivy League teams.

- Earned Mid-Major All-American Honors.

Dominik Koll, Sophomore

-Came on in the second half of the regular season and captured four first place finishes in six meet.

Following the home opener against Penn, the Lions will continue the weekend with Ivy League play on the road at Yale on Saturday, Nov. 10 at 2 p.m. Columbia captured a win in the teams' last meeting in New Haven, Conn.(177-122) and will look to avenge last year's regular season home loss to the Bulldogs.

The Lions will remain on the road for the 2012 calendar year, including meets at Harvard on Friday, Nov. 16, at Army Saturday, Nov. 17, and at the three day Brown Invitational beginning Friday, Nov. 30.

Columbia will return home to begin the 2013 calendar year hosting Bucknell on Saturday, Jan. 5 at 1 p.m. After a road trip to Cornell on Jan. 18, the Lions will host three consecutive meets beginning with a big homecoming meet against Brown on Saturday, Jan. 26.  On Friday, Feb.1, Navy will enter Uris Pool followed by Princeton on Friday, Feb.8. The last meet of the regular season will be in Hanover, N.H. where they face the Big Green of Dartmouth.
