Men's Swimming and Diving Defeat Army On the Road, 183-117
WEST POINT, N.Y. - The Columbia men's swimming and diving team grabbed its second dual meet win of the season at Army on Saturday, Nov. 17. The Lions won 12 of 16 events to defeat the Knights 183-117 and improve to 2-2 on the season.
Sophomores David Jakl, Kevin Quinn, and junior Philipp Gaissert each posted a pair of individual wins to lead the Lions in one of the best team performances on the year. The first win of the day came in the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:32.60 from the quartet of sophomore Omar Arafa, junior Matthew Swallow, sophomore Alex Ngan, and senior John Wright. Junior Harry Stephenson battled for the first individual win of the meet in the 1000 freestyle at 9:32.21.
A dominating performance by Columbia in the 100 backstroke was the first of two wins for Jakl with a time of 51.22. The top three spots in the event belonged to the Lions with first-years Benjamin Xu coming in second at 51.87 and Jared Namba in third at 51.95. Jakl's second victory came in the 200 IM with the winning time of 1:54.80.
Quinn added a pair of wins in the 200 fly with a time 1:49.11 and the 200 backstroke with a time of 1:51.00. Gaissert joined his two win teammates Jakl and Quinn, posting first place finishes in the 50 free at 20.73 and the 100 free at 45:93.
Sophomore Stanley Wong picked up his first win of the year in the 100 breast, hitting the wall at 57.61. The talented first-year Christian Vivadelli also earned his first win in the 500 free at 4:36.23. On the diving board, the Lions were led by senior Jason Collazo with a win in the three-meter diving event with 329.0 points and a runner-up finish in the one-meter diving event at 294.07.
Columbia capped the meet on a high note taking the 400 free relay. The quartet of juniors Daniel Tan, Eric Traub, Wright, and Gaissert combined for a time of 3:05.67. Up next, Columbia will head to Providence, R.I. for the three-day Brown Invitational from Friday, Nov. 30 - Sunday, Dec. 2.
