NEW YORK – The Columbia men’s swimming and diving team is set to begin the 2013-14 season with a busy three-meet weekend. The Lions travel to Philadelphia, Pa., for their season and Ivy League opener against Penn on Friday, Nov. 15 at 6 p.m. They will follow with the home opener at Uris Pool against Yale on Saturday, Nov. 16 at 5 p.m. The Lions will finish the weekend against Army in non-conference action at home on Sunday, Nov. 17 for 1 p.m. meet.

Columbia will look to carry momentum over from a successful season in 2012-13, which included several program milestones.

Last year, the Lions finished the dual-meet season at 8-2 and a 5-2 Ivy League mark, including seven straight victories to close the season.

Columbia finished third at the Ivy League Championships with a tally of 1,135 points, the most points in school history. The team posted four program records and several career-best performances throughout the meet. In addition, the Lions’ successful season was highlighted by a victory over No. 22-ranked Princeton for the first time since 1981.

The 2013-14 squad goes deep with experience, returning 29 letterwinners while graduating just four members of the class of 2013. Among the top returners are 2013-14 All-Ivy selections Dominik Koll, David Jakl, Daniel Gosek, Omar Arafa and Phillipp Gaissert.

The Lions will be led under the leadership of senior captains Phillipp Gaissert, Harry Stephenson, Matthew Swallow and Eric Traub.

Scouting Penn
The Quakers (0-1) begin their Ivy League season by hosting the Lions on Friday in Sheerr Pool. Penn is coming off a 153-147 road loss to Connecticut, during which the Quakers won seven events in Wolff-Zackin Natatorium.

The Lions will look to repeat their success in last year’s season opener, which came as a 182.5-115.5 downing of the Quakers in Uris Pool.

Scouting Yale
The Bulldogs (1-0) opened the season by downing Southern Connecticut State University, 210-88. Yale begins Ivy League competition at Columbia on Saturday.

The Lions dropped one of its only two losses to Yale last season by a score of 170-130.

Scouting Army
Like Penn, the Black Knights (2-1) are coming off a setback to UCONN, 192-107. Army collected three first-place wins and was runner-up in four events in the loss. However, the Black Knights opened the season with two straight wins over Boston University (157-139) and Massachusetts (197-97).

The Lions earned a handy 183-117 victory a season ago in West Point and will look to continue their winning ways in Uris Pool on Sunday at 1 p.m.
