NEW YORK - Columbia men's basketball junior Brian Barbour and junior women's swimmer Katie Meili are the December Student-Athletes of the Month.

Barbour had a terrific month of December, helping lead Columbia to a 6-1 mark during the month. It was the best December for Columbia since the 1969-70 season, when the Lions won 10 straight games to start that season.

During December, Barbour averaged 15.4 points, 4.9 assists and 3.3 rebounds per game. He started the month by scoring a career-high 24 points to lift the Lions to a 69-61 victory at Loyola Marymount on December 2. On December 30, Barbour finished the month as he began it, scoring 21 points with a season-high seven assists in a 77-67 win over Lafayette.

Meili started her season well with an outstanding month of December. Early in the month, she swam at the US Nationals, qualifying for the Bonus Consolation Final and finished in 29th place. Meili also won four different events in the double dual tri-meet with Harvard and Penn.

Meili finished first in the 200-yard breaststroke in a time of 2:15.71 and took first in the 200-yard individual medley in a time of 2:02.92. Meili also was part of the winning 400-yard freestyle relay team with a Uris Pool record time of 3:27.37, and she set another pool record in the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:02.11.
