Women's Swimming & Diving Defeats Cornell

NEW YORK - The Columbia women's swimming and diving team gets their second straight win during Saturday's homecoming meet, with a 194.5-99.5 victory over Ivy League foe Cornell. Columbia won 13 of 16 events in route of the Big Red. The Lions improve to 4-1 overall on the year and 3-1 in Ivy League play.

Sophomore Kathleen Furr began the meet for the Lions with a first place finish in the 3m diving event with 252 points. Junior Kristin Hehir also tallied 240.76 points to place third in the event.

A first place finish in the 400 medley relay for the squad of senior Dorothy Baker, junior Katie Meili, junior Kristina Parsons, and first-year Salena Huang ignited the Lions in the next event. With a winning time of 3:50.23, the squad set a new Uris Pool record. The previous record was set in 2008 with a time of 3:50.53.

Strong swimming in the 1650 yard freestyle kept Columbia rolling, led by first-year swimmer Chacha Bugatti. Bugatti took a first place finish with a time of 16.49.95, just seconds from setting a Uris Pool record. She also went on to win the 500 yard freestyle with a time of 4:59.01.

Taking the 200 yard freestyle was first-year Stella Zhao with a time of 1:56.97. Senior Caitlyn Rogers would follow with a close second place finish time of 1:57.42. First-year Mikaila Gaffey also added a win in the 100 yard backstroke with a time of 58.82.

The Lions continued to roll in the 100 yard breaststroke taking the top three places in the event. Sophomore Corinna Bertelsen took first place with a time of 1:09.87, sophomore Laney Kluge followed in second with a time 1:10.01, and Parsons took third with a time of 1:10.74. Berteslen also went on  to win  the 200 yard breaststroke for the Lions with a time 2:28.53.

Sophomore Aileen Smith took first place in the 200 yard butterfly to lead Columbia with a time if 2:08.15. Huang would soon follow with a first place victory in the 100 yard freestyle. Sophomore Grace Senko won the 200 yard backstroke with a time of 2:05.53 and Junior Caroline Lukins took first in the 100 yard butterfly with a time 58.20.First-year Alyssa Menz also added another victory for Columbia in the 1m diving event with 261.97

The Big Red was led by sophomore Kim Jerome who placed first in the 200 yard IM with a time 2:11.08. The squad of Sarah Icke, Stephanne, Ah-quah, Monica Patterson, and Melissa Mroziniski capped the meet for Cornell with a first place finish in the 200 yard freestyle relay.

On Saturday, Jan. 28 at 1:30 p.m. the Lions will head to Boston University to face the Terriers and Ivy League opponent Brown in their second double dual tri-meet of the season.
