NEW YORK – The Columbia track & field team opens its outdoor season this weekend competing in several meets across the country. A number of jumpers and sprinters highlight the Lions trip to Austin, Texas for the 2013 Texas Relays on Wednesday March 27 – Saturday March 30. A handful of mid-distance and distance runners will be watched at the 2013 Stanford Invitational in Palo Alto, Calif. from Friday, March 29 – Saturday, March 30. The Lions will also compete in the Monmouth University Season Opener, from March 29-30 in West Long Branch, N.J. for a busy weekend.
Columbia is coming off an indoor track & field season that garnered eight All-Ivy League selections and saw three new school record performances. Marvellous Iheukwumere earned two Ivy League titles in the 60m run (7.51) and 200m run (24.46) to add to a stellar junior season. Seniors Uju Ofoche and QueenDenise Okeke both showed well on the field for the Lions, each grabbing Ivy League crowns. Ofoche's leap of 6.06m gave the senior her final indoor long jump title and third of her career. With a career-best leap of 12.87m, Okeke captured the Ivy League triple jump title for the second time in her career. At the 2013 Columbia Final Qualifier, Trina Bills became a school record holder in the women's 800m with a time of 2:07.59.
On the men’s side, the quartet of John Gregorek, Connor Claflin, Harrison McFann, and Mark Feigen broke the Columbia school record in the distance medley relay, clocking at 9:40.67 at the Armory Invitational to open the indoor season. Feigen also set the school record in the 3000m run with a time of 8:04 at the 2013 Columbia Final Qualifier to cap the season.
