Track & Field Begins Outdoor Season This Weekend

NEW YORK – The Columbia track & field team is set to begin its 2014 outdoor season this weekend as they compete in a pair of meets on both coasts this weekend.  . A number Lions make the trip to Palo Alto, Calif. to race in the 2014 Stanford Invitational, while the majority of the team will compete in Princeton N.J. at the annual Sam Howell Invitational. Both two-day meets will run from Friday, April 4 – Saturday, April 5.

The Lions are fresh off highly successful performances at the 2014 NCAA Indoor Track & Field National Championships in March. The Lions headed west with six athletes competing in three events and behind several fantastic performances, every athlete capped the year with first team All-America honors. Nadia Eke placed sixth overall in the women’s triple jump, John Gregorek  added a sixth-place finish in the men’s one-mile run and another All-American fifth-place finish by the distance medley relay squad of Brendon Fish, Noah Lartigue, Harrison McFann and Daniel Everett. The men’s team capped the indoor season with a top-30 national ranking with a 29th overall team finish at the championships.

Columbia‘s indoor track & field season garnered nine All-Ivy League selections and saw three new program record performances. Eke captured two Ivy League titles in the women’s long jump (5.74) and the women’s triple jump with a program record of 13.09 to become the first Lion to surpass the 13meter mark. Marvellous Iheukwumere set the school record in the 60m dash for the third time in her career with a time of 7.46 at the NYU Challenge.

On the men’s side, Brendon Fish (1000m) and Tait Rutherford (3000m) both grabbed Ivy League crowns. Gregorek competed in the pretigious Wannamaker Mile and was apart of the quartet of Mcfann, Fish, and Everett that broke the school record in the distance medley relay, clocking in at 9:30.72 at the Notre Dame Invitational.
