NEW YORK - On Monday, the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) announced the USTFCCCA Region Athletes and Coaches of the Year for the NCAA Division I indoor track & field 2011 season. And Columbia’s Associate Head Coach of Track & Field Gavin O'Neal was named the winner for the Northeast Region, assistant coach category.
O’Neal led the Columbia women to their best-ever showing at the Indoor Ivy League Championships in 2011, as the Lions finished second, with the highest point total in program history. His sprint, jumps and hurdles corps set two championship meet records, two conference records, notched six individual championships and one relay championship title. He has coached four athletes to top 25 rankings, including junior Sharay Hale, who is an NCAA qualifier in the 400m and holds the Ivy League record in the 200m.
This is the second year in a row O'Neal has been honored by the USTFCCCA. He was also named Northeast Region Assistant Coach of the Year in 2010.
Hale and O’Neal will travel to the NCAA National Championships in College Station, Texas, Friday, March 11 to Saturday, March 12.
