Day One: Track & Field Kicks-Off Penn Relays

PHILADELPHIA - On April 24, the Columbia track & field team joined over 300 colleges to kick-off the Penn Relays at Franklin Field. Jack Boyle had a standout for the Lions in the men’s 10,000m championships. The first-year grabbed a runner-up finish with a time of 29:35.83.

Thursday’s races began with one of the highlighted events for the Lions in the women’s distance medley championship of America. The foursome of Olivia Sadler, Jaycee Parker, Trina Bills and Waverly Neer combined for a ninth-place time of 11:18.85 in a field of 14 teams.

Both Leila Mantiilla and Chelsea Carrick competed in the women’s 3,000m steeplechase championships. Mantilla posted a 12th-place time of 10:43.33, while Carrick followed in 16th place at 10:59.83.  In the women’s 3,000m championship, Henna Rustami grabbed a 15th-place finish with a time of 9:36.89, along with Aryn Foland in 19th-place at 9:45.09.

On the field, Joanna Koronios had a busy morning in the throws. Koronios started in the women’s college discus throw with a measure of 40.87m. She returned in the women’s hammer throw for a measure of 50.02m to place 14th overall.

In the men’s 3,000m steeplechase championship, Joseph Kotran lined up for the Lions. Kotran clocked in with a time of 9:03.38 for seventh place overall. Byron Jones added a 13th-place finish in the men’s 5,000m championship with a personal-best time of 14:16.57 and Tait Rutherford placed ninth in the men’s 5,000m college heat with a time of 14:33.02. Daniel Nestor also took eighth-place in the Olympic development 5,000m heat with a time of 14:32.19.
