Neer Grabs Top 10 Finish At NCAA Championships
EUGENE, Ore. –On Saturday, June 14, Columbia wrapped the 2014 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field Championships at Hayward Field. In the women's 5000m run, Waverly Neer represented Columbia against the top runners in the country. The junior clocked in with a 10th-place overall time of 16:06.23. With a top 10 finish, Neer caps the season with second team All-America honors.
On day two of the 2014 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field Championships, John Gregorek headed to Hayward Field to compete in the men's 1500m run. To advance to the semifinals, the senior needed to finish in the top five of his heat.
Gregorek lined up in the opening heat and went on to finish 10th with a time of 3:47.68. The Massachusetts native, capped an impressive senior campaign that began with a school record setting performance in the indoor Distance Medley Relay at the Notre Dame Invitational. He was selected to race in the NYRR Wannamker Mile and went on to earn first team All-America honors with a sixth-place finish in the indoor one-mile at the NCAA Indoor National Championships with a time of 4:04.36. The 1,5000m outdoor Ivy League runner-up remained one of Columbia's most versatile runners throughout his career.
On Wednesday, June 11, Columbia track & field helped kicked-off the seasons’ national climactic meet at the 2014 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field Championships. Up first to represent the Lions was decorated senior, Harrison McFann in his stapled 800m run.
Mcfann lined up in the second heat of the 800m semifinals run at Hayward Field. To qualify for the finals, runners must finish in the top two of their heats or post the next two best times following the automatic finish qualifiers. Mcfann clocked in with an eighth-place time of 1:50.16 in his heat for an 18th-place overall finish.
The 2014 Maniatty Award Winner capped a stellar career on Wednesday afternoon. The Ohio native is a three-time All-American, receiving those honors twice in the outdoor 800-meter run (honorable mention in 2012, second team in 2013) and once with the distance medley relay team after a fifth-place finish at the NCAA Indoor Championships this past winter.
He also has four Ivy League titles under his belt. As a sophomore, McFann ran the second leg of the winning 4x800-meter relay and won the 800-meter solo at the 2012 Outdoor Heps. Last spring, he and the rest of the 4x800 relay squad successfully defended its Ancient Eight crown. The senior most recently grabbed the 2014 Ivy League crown in the outdoor 800-meter run last month. Additionally, McFann holds the school record in the 800-meter run with a time of 1:47.91 set at the George Mason Spring Invitational earlier this month.
