A Pair Of Ivy League Matches Up Next For Men's Squash

NEW YORK – This weekend, a pair of road Ivy League matches will be on tap for the No. 11 Columbia men’s squash team. On Saturday, Jan. 11 at 12 p.m. the Lions will take on one of the top ranked teams in the country in No. 3 Yale. Columbia will follow the tough match with another familiar foe in No. 16 Brown on Sunday, Jan. 12.

With a 1-1 start to the season, Columbia will face its biggest challenge at undefeated Yale on Saturday. The Lions are coming off a close battle on the road at No. 6 Cornell, where the Big Red edged Columbia 5-4. The contest saw several five-game matches, including an amazing comeback victory by Mohamed AbdelMaksoud at the No. 3 position in the longest match of his career. After dropping the first two sets, AbdelMaksoud rallied to win three straight sets to defeat Cornell’s Bryan Kearing 9-11, 18-20, 11-7, 11-9, 12-10.

ABOUT YALE
No. 3 Yale is unbeaten to start the season at 4-0. The Bulldogs have rounded up a number of wins over top-25 opponents, including No. 22 Amherst, No. 18 Williams, No. 15 Drexel and No. 6 Franklin & Marshall. Columbia will be its first test at home this year as they open conference play this weekend.

SERIES HISTORY BROWN
Since the start of the men’s squash program in 2010, Columbia is unbeaten in facing Brown having won both meetings over the last two seasons. The Lions picked up its first ever Ivy League win in the 2011-12 season defeating the Bears 6-3 in their last trip to Providence, R.I. Columbia also put together an impressive 8-1 victory at home last season.

ABOUT BROWN
The Bears are 2-4 this season having played a number of solid opponents through its first six contest, including four teams in the top-16 of the Dunlop Men's College Squash Association Team Rankings. Brown’s two wins were both 9-0 shutouts over Tufts and Northeastern.
