NEW HAVEN, Conn. - The No. 11 Columbia men's squash team won six of nine matches, including the top four spots on the ladder, to defeat No. 14 Navy, 6-3, in the opening round of the Hoehn Cup (B Division) at the 2013 CSA National Team Championships.
Similar to the first time these two teams played, a majority of the matches needed four or five sets to be decided. The lone sweeps of the match came in the No. 1 and 5 matches. Ramit Tandon captured an 11-3, 11-5, 11-4 win in the top match for Columbia, while Colin Barry secured the No. 5 match for Navy.
Mohamed AbdelMaksoud and Tony Zou both used five sets to record wins for the Lions in the No. 2 and 3 matches, respectively. AbdelMaksoud won the first, third and fifth games en route to his victory, while Zou battled back after dropping the opening set to edge Hunter Beck for the win.
Graham Miao gave Columbia another point, downing Hunter Bouchard in the No. 4 match in four games, 11-5, 2-11, 11-7, 11-8.
Alec Goldberg and Alex Nalle closed out the victory for Columbia with wins in the final two matches of the ladder. After going down 2-1, Goldberg won the final two games of the No. 8 match to beat Mitchell Bottini. Nalle was tied with Cotter Walker after the first two games, but took the next two for Columbia.
Columbia will next take on No. 10 Williams in the Hoehn Cup semifinals, Saturday at 3:30 p.m. The Lions and Ephs met earlier this season with Williams capturing a 6-3 win.
