Men's Squash Closes Out Summers Cup With 5-4 Win Over Colby

NEW YORK - The Columbia men's squash team won the consolation bracket of the Summers Cup at the National Team Championship on Sunday, February 27 by defeating Colby 5-4.  With the win, the Lions closed out their first varsity season at 13-5 overall.

This marked the second time these two teams have met this year.  Columbia defeated Colby 7-2 on January 15 at the Pioneer Valley Invitational.  This time proved to be a real battle between the two, but the Lions ultimately edged the Mules 5-4.

Andrew Tan and Theo Buchsbaum won their matches in three straight games. Tan defeated Nat Cooper 11-7, 11-5, 11-5 at No. 4, and Buchsbaum downed Daniel Lesser 11-6, 11-5, 11-9 at the No. 6 spot.

After dropping his first game to William Sullivan, Graham Miao came back to win 11-7, 11-7 and 11-5 at the No. 2 spot. Also winning in four games was Alec Goldberg playing No. 5.  Goldberg led 2-0 after defeating Trey Simpson 11-5, 11-8, but dropped game three 6-11.  He came back to win the next one 11-4 for the individual win.

Picking up the final victory for the Lions was Martin Goman.  The first-year dropped the first game 8-11, but responded with an 11-3 win over Will Hochman in game two.  Game three went to his opponent 11-5, but Goman came back to win 11-7 and 11-9 for the victory at No. 7.
