Men's Squash Edges #10 Western Ontario For Trip To Finals At National Championshps

Cambridge, Mass. - After rolling in the opening round of the CSA National Championships yesterday, the No. 11 Columbia men’s squash continued its high-level play in a tough semi-final round matchup against No. 10 Western Ontario on Saturday, Feb. 15. The Lions edged Western Ontario 5-4 at the Murr Center to advance to the finals of the Hoehn Cup (B Division) for the second time in three years.

Ramit Tandon put together an impressive performance with a win in straight games at the No. 1 position, 11-4, 11-4, 11-7.  Jonathan Gill added a solid day at the No. 6 position adding another sweep for the Lions, 13-11, 11-8, 11-3.

At the No. 3 and 4 positions, Columbia saw a pair of strong victories by Mohamed AbdelMaksoud and Joshua Sekhar. After taking the first game, AbdelMaksoud found himself down 2-1 at No.3 after three games. The junior dug deep to win back-to-back games to come away with the win, 11-4, 5-11, 9-11, 11-6, 11-7.

Sekhar and Western Ontario’s Adam Engel were in a back and forth battle at No.4 trading wins. Sekhar remained strong in the fifth game for an 11-5 victory.

Alex Nalle took on teammate AbdelMaksoud’s resilience at No. 9 for another win for Columbia. Nalle came up big taking down Eric Mercer, 11-7, 3-11, 11-13, 12-10, 11-9.

Up next, the Lions will cap the season in the finals of the Hoehn Cup (B Divison) on Sunday, Feb. 16 at 11:30 a.m. against Ivy League foe No.  9 Princeton.
