Women's Squash Begins 2011 at Pioneer Valley Invitational

AMHERST, Mass. - The Columbia women's squash team will look build upon its 2-1 record when it returns to action on January 14-16 when it takes part in the Pioneer Valley Invitational.  The Lions will play six matches over the three-day event, being held on the campuses of Amherst, Mount Holyoke and Smith.

Friday, January 14 vs. Smith at 5:30 p.m.
Saturday, January 15 vs. Mount Holyoke at 11:30 a.m.
Saturday, January 15 vs. Bates at 3:15 p.m.
Saturday, January 15 vs. Colby at 7 p.m.
Sunday, January 16 vs. Wellesley at 10:30 a.m.
Sunday, January 16 vs. Connecticut College at 1:30 p.m.

Columbia was last in action on November 20, 2010 when they swept a weekend pair of matches.  The Lions, then ranked #20 in the country, picked up their first varsity win against then-ranked #16 George Washington, 6-3. A trio of first-years, Monica Stone (#3), Skylar Dickey (#5) and Morgan Strauss (#6), each won their matches in three straight matches.   Next up, Columbia easily handled Georgetown, winning all nine matches, all by 3-0 scores.

After starting out the season ranked #25 in the country, the Columbia women's squash team has moved up in the latest College Squash Association's National Rankings.  As of early December, the Lions now stand at #17 nationally, battling for a spot in the Kurtz Cup (teams ranked in spots #9-#16).

The Lions (2-1) will return to action on Saturday, January 29 when they travel to Poughkeepsie, N.Y. to take on Northeastern and Vassar.
