HARTFORD, Conn. - After day one of the 2013 College Squash Association Individual National Championships, a trio of Columbia student-athletes remain alive. Ramit Tandon and Mohamed AbdelMaksoud are continuing on in the men's draws, while Reyna Pacheco has advanced in Holleran Cup.

Pacheco will begin Saturday with a round of 16 match against the fifth-seeded Alexis Saunders from Princeton. The first-year from San Diego, Calif. opened the tournament with an 11-7, 11-2, 11-4 over Jessica Rubine from Tufts. In her second match of the day, Pacheco faced Penn's Chloe Blacker who had received a bye in the round of 64. Pacheco went up two sets early and then closed out the match in the fourth game.

In the Pool Trophy (A Division), Tandon knocked off a pair of opponents to set up a quarterfinal contest against Bates' Khalek Abdel. Tandon, the fourth seed, captured a straight-game win over Yale's Zachary Leman to start the tournament and then toppled Rochester's Neil Cordell. Columbia's top player allowed just 13 points to Cordell.

AbdelMaksoud, the top seed in the Molloy Cup (B Division), competed just once after receiving a bye in the opening round. The Columbia sophomore downed Aditya Advani from Tufts, 11-7, 12-10, 9-11, 12-10, to advance to the round of 16. Amherst's Noah Browne will be on court opposite AbdelMaksoud Saturday.

Tony Zou and Alisha Maity also represented Columbia Friday, but dropped opening round matches.
