NEW YORK— The Lions came out strong under the hot sun at Van Cortlandt Park on Friday morning for the Iona Meet of Champions.
The men posted a first place team finish in the 8k, and senior Ryan Thomas finished first overall at 25:31.7. He out ran second place Jack O’Leary from Iona by a full 2 seconds. Joining him in the top-10 were Junior Brian Zabilski who came in third place at 25.41.1, sophomore Kenny Vasbinder, who posted a 5th place finish at 25:43.5 and junior Lucky Schreiner who finished 9th overall at 25:58.2. Senior Spencer Haik completed the top-5 for Columbia with a 12th place finish at 26:14.8.
The women finished first in Division I, and second overall behind Johns Hopkins in the 5k race. First-year Serena Tripodi came across the line first for the Lions, and fourth overall at 18:45.1. First-year Samantha Marin was next for Columbia in 10th place at 19:00.9.
Senior Victoria Ingram came in 13th at 19:08.7, followed by Sophomore Katie Wasserman who came in 21st at 19:28.3 and first-year Camila Michaels who place 25th at 19:38.5 to round out the top-5 for Columbia.
The Lions have a week break from racing before they are back on the course for the Paul Short Run in Bethlehem, Pa. on Friday, September 29.
