JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — The Columbia softball team (3-8) continues its 10-day spring break trip with a midweek doubleheader against North Florida (10-13) on Tuesday. First pitch is slated for 4 p.m. at the UNF Softball Complex.
LAST TIME OUT
Columbia began spring break with three games on Saturday and Sunday at the Stetson Westin Invitational. The Lions got the weekend started with a thrilling, 7-6, victory over North Dakota State. Stetson outlasted Columbia in extras, 4-3, to close out the first day of competition. Sunday, the Lions fell in five innings to Manhattan, 9-1. The final game of the weekend against Colgate was rained out.
IVY LEAGUE WEEKLY HONOR ROLL – WEEK 4
Juniors Madison Gott and Olivia Parker were named to the Ivy League weekly honor roll on Monday. Gott went 6 for 10 (.600) at last weekend’s Stetson Westin Invitational, which included a go-ahead, two-out, two-run home run in the bottom of the sixth of Saturday’s 7-6 victory over North Dakota State. The Weston, Florida, native slugged 1.100 through three games, including a 3-for-3 outing against Stetson. Parker posted a .750 batting average (6 for 8) and scored a team-best three runs through the tournament’s three games. Parker, from Ankeny, Iowa, went 3 for 3 in Sunday morning’s game against Manhattan.
Columbia has hit 11 home runs in 11 games and ranks No. 26 in the NCAA in home runs per game (1.00). The power hitting is led by junior Madison Gott, who has a team-leading four home runs and ranks No. 20 nationally in home runs per game (0.36). Gott carries an .886 slugging percentage, No. 28 in the NCAA, and is also hitting .457. First-year Sommer Grzybek, sophomore Jordan Townsend and junior Taylor Troutt all have two home runs this season.
Six of Columbia’s 11 games have either been decided by one run or gone to extra innings. The Lions hold a 1-5 record in such games, earning their first one-run victory of the season on Saturday over North Dakota State, 7-6. Columbia dropped two one-run games on opening weekend to UAlbany and Kent State. Army West Point edged Columbia in extra innings, 8-4, at the Patriot Classic, followed by a 3-2 decision the next day. The Lions fell to tournament host Stetson last weekend in extra innings, 4-3.
SCOUTING NORTH FLORIDA
North Florida (10-13) took last weekend off from competition. The Ospreys traveled to No. 1 Florida State for a doubleheader last Wednesday and were shut out in both games, 8-0 and 3-0. They hosted the North Florida Invitational two weekends ago, posting a 2-2 record with wins over Albany and Mount St. Mary’s. Sophomore Navia Penrod leads the offense with a .430 batting average. Penrod is also quick on the basepaths, swiping a team-best 10 bags on 12 attempts. Taylor Aguayo (.338), Macayla Kelley (.345) and Dominica Cocuzza (.360) are all hitting above .300. In the circle, Logan Green (3-8) boasts a team-best 2.42 ERA, striking out 51 in 84 innings pitched. Morgan Blourne (4-3) has a 3.78 ERA in 50 innings.
