ITHACA, N.Y.—The Columbia men’s golf team opens its fall 2017 season when it travels to Ithaca, N.Y. and the Robert Trent Golf Course to compete in the two-day, 54-hole Cornell Invitational. It is the second consecutive year that the Lions will begin their season at the Cornell Invite.
Competition begins on Saturday in the stroke play event. The teams will play 36 holes with morning tee times on Saturday, then 18 holes with tee times on Sunday. The Robert Trent Jones Golf Course at Cornell University plays to 6,904 yards and a par of 71 from the Big Red tees. It has a rating of 73.1 and slope of 137.
Sixteen teams will compete in the event including Columbia, Binghamton, Brown, Bucknell, Canisius, Colgate, Dartmouth, Delaware, Drexel, Penn, St. Bonaventure, St. Joseph’s, Siena, Temple and Yale.
Last year, Columbia finished in fifth place out of 14 teams at the Cornell Invitational. The Lions shot a 38-over-par 305-298-287-890 in the event.
Head Coach Rich Mueller and Columbia returns five lettermen from its 2016-17 squad including seniors Curtis Chan and Joshua Suh, junior Sunny Yan and sophomores Nick Brisebois and Cullen Chung. Suh led the Lions with a 74.17 stroke average, five top-25 individual finishes and a low round score of 68. The Lions welcome four new first-year players including Youn Sung Kim, Arjun Puri, John Robertson and Dan Terrell.
The event is the first of four fall tournaments that the Lions will compete in. On Sept. 24-26, Columbia will travel to Centreville, Va. and the Chantilly National Golf & Country Club to compete in the Patriot Intercollegiate, followed by a trip to Skokie, Ill. to play in the Windon Memorial Classic (Oct. 8-9). The Lions conclude their fall season at the Camden Collegiate in Camden, S.C. Oct. 21-22.
