NEW YORK—The Columbia women’s tennis team begins its fall competition schedule on this weekend, Friday through Sunday, when Penn, Boston U, Maryland, Hofstra and St. John’s travel to Manhattan for the three-day Columbia Invitational. All matches will take place at Dick Savitt Tennis Center, located at Columbia’s Baker Athletic Complex (corner of 218th and Broadway Avenue).

An Intercollegiate Tennis Association sanctioned event, the Columbia Invitational will have five flights of singles and three flights of doubles. All singles matches begin at 9:30 a.m. on Friday. Doubles matches will begin at approximately 2 p.m. on Friday.


The five singles draws are named after each of New York City’s five boroughs: Brooklyn, Queens, Staten Island, Bronx and Manhattan. There are three doubles draws. Each of the singles draws will feature eight players in a double elimination bracketed tournament. All first round singles matches will take place on Friday with semifinal and consolation semifinal matches on Saturday. Championship matches are set for Sunday. The doubles draws begin Friday afternoon.

Singles match format is two out of three full sets with no advantage scoring. Doubles format will be one six-game set, no advantage with a tiebreaker at 6-6.


As for Columbia’s players in singles competition, Jennifer Kerr and Christie Wan will compete in the Brooklyn Draw, Sarah Hu and Ali Pollack will play in the Queens Draw, Sarah Rahman and Andrea Kevakian will compete in the Staten Island Draw, Adi Milstein and Paulina Ferrari will play in the Bronx Draw and Renee Ren will play in the Manhattan Draw.


As for doubles, Kerr and Ferrari team up for Doubles 1 Draw, Wan/Milstein and Pollack/Hu team up for the Doubles 2 Draw and Kevakian/Ren will play in the Doubles 3 Draw.

Approximately 12:30 p.m., Queens Draw and top of Bronx Draw

Approximately 2:00 p.m., bottom of Bronx Draw


Friday Doubles Order of Play

Approximately 2:00 p.m., Main Draw Doubles will begin.

We will start with Doubles 1 and go down the draws to Doubles 2 and 3 until all main draw first round doubles matches are completed. Any players still playing singles will be skipped over and given at least 30 minutes between singles and doubles.


Approximately 3:30 p.m., First round Consolation Singles Matches will be played for Manhattan, Brooklyn and Staten Island Draws
