MIAMI, Fla.—Columbia began its 2018 Spring Break trip to Miami, Fla. with a convincing 6-1 women’s tennis win over Marquette Tuesday at the FIU Tennis Center.


Columbia (6-4) built a 4-0 lead and clinched the team victory before Marquette finally won a match. The Lions captured the doubles point when junior Andrea Kevakian and sophomore Renee Ren broke a 1-1 tie with a 7-6 (1) win over Marquette’s Isabella Franks and Lesley Foe at No. 3 doubles. First-year Christie Wan and senior Adi Milstein set the scene with a 6-3 decision over Marquette’s Natalija Popovic and Fleur Eggink at No. 1 doubles.


In singles, the Lions got off to a fast start as first-year Jennifer Kerr won a 6-2, 6-1 decision over Marquette’s Paula Tormos Sanchez at No. 1, Kevakian registered a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Marquette’s Andrea Amorteagui at No. 4 and sophomore Ali Pollack sealed the deal with a 6-4, 6-3 win at No. 5 singles over Marquette’s Isabella Franks. For the first time this year, Kerr (13-7) was competing at the No. 1 singles position, Kevakian (16-4 overall) got back on the winning track as she won her 15th singles match in 17 tries and Pollack improved to 11-6 with her second straight win.


"Really pround of our team today," Columbia assistant coach Dillon Pottish said. "We started off very well in doubles at the No. 1 and 3 spots. Our singles play was dominant and I'm hoping we can take this great effort into our next match against FIU."


Also winning singles matches for Columbia were first-year Sarah Rahman and junior Sarah Hu. Rahman claimed a 6-3, 6-4 win at No. 6 singles over Marquette’s Lesley Foe and Hu won a 6-2, 2-6, 6-3 decision at No. 3 over Marquette’s Fleur Eggink.


Marquette dropped to 5-6 on the year.


Columbia plays its second Spring Break match when it takes on No. 43 ranked and host Florida International on Thursday at 1 p.m. The Lions will also face Florida Atlantic on Friday at 10 a.m.
