NEW YORK, N.Y. - Four Columbia student-athletes were chosen as Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholars for 2008. Ben Nwachukwu was named to the men’s basketball first team for the second year, while Nancy Shon, Nina Suda, and Cassie Ligh each earned second-team recognition in golf, tennis, and volleyball, respectively.

To be considered, a student of color must compete in an intercollegiate sport, maintain a cumulative grade-point average of at least 3.2, and be active on his or her campus or in the community.

Ben Nwachukwu, who graduated in May with a degree in psychology/pre-medicine, was named to the men’s basketball first team for the second time in his career. Nwachukwu, who broke the school record for games played in a career with 108, will be attending Harvard Medical School next year.

Nancy Shon, an English major at Barnard College, was named to the second team for women’s golf. This spring she helped the Columbia women’s golf team to a second-place finish in the Ivy League. After finishing seventh overall, Shon earned All-Ivy League recognition.

Nina Suda was named to the second team for women’s tennis. The junior biology major played number one singles this season and was elected team captain.

Cassie Ligh graduated this spring with a degree in neuroscience and behavior and was named to the Arthur Ashe second team for volleyball. Ligh captained the Lions as a senior and graduates as the second-ranked player in Columbia history in digs.
