NEW YORK – The Karen Blank Award was given to Sara Taffel of the Columbia women's fencing team at the 96th edition of the Varsity C Celebration in the Roone Arledge Auditorium Wednesday night.

The award is given to a senior female student-athlete enrolled in Barnard College who exemplifies the qualities of academic success, athletic achievement, strong sporting behavior and commitment to the community.

Taffel is the fifth recipient of this accolade and first honoree from the fencing program.

Taffel was a part of Columbia's two NCAA Championship teams in 2015 and 2016, earning second team All-America honors in consecutive years. She is also a four-time All-Ivy League honoree and helped the women's fencing team capture back-to-back Ivy League titles in 2015 and 2016. Taffel went a stellar 53-8 in her four Ivy League championships appearances.

A native New Yorker, Taffel compiled 258 career wins and had a winning percentage of .770 in her Columbia career.
