NEW YORK—A record-high 12 student-athletes were recognized with awards at the 2018 Columbia University Leadership and Excellence Ceremony held Monday evening in Low Library.

 

Among the 12 senior student-athletes earning awards at the annual event included women’s soccer’s Natalie Ambrose ’18CC, men’s fencer John Avendano ’18CC, men’s soccer’s Arthur Bosua ’18CC, women’s rower Charlotte Buck ’18CC, football’s Zach Dansby ’18SEAS, softball’s Madison Gott ’18CC, football’s Anders Hill ’18CC, baseball’s Matt Karo ’18SEAS, women’s cross country/track and field athlete Erin Melly ’18CC, women’s track and field’s Akua Obeng-Akrofi ’18CC, men’s fencer James Sands ’18SEAS and women’s fencer Amy Tong ’18CC.

 

The annual awards recognize the significant contributions of Columbia College and Columbia Engineering students to the Columbia community. Awards presented included the King's Crown Leadership Excellence Awards which were presented to individuals in eight different categories: civic responsibility, innovation and enhancement, inclusion and advocacy, Columbia spirit, health and wellness, community building, indelible mark, and principled action. Up to 10 individuals may be recognized within each category. In addition, Senior Marshals were also recognized.

 

These prestigious awards are presented not only to student-athletes, but to any Columbia College or Engineering student who is selected from those nominated.

King’s Crown Leadership Excellence Awards

Campbell Award

This award, named for Bill Campbell ’62CC, who was Chair Emeritus of the University’s Board of Trustees, celebrates a student leader at each school who exemplifies exceptional leadership and builds Columbia spirit.

Scholar Athlete Award

This award is presented by the Offices of the Deans for Columbia College and Columbia Engineering to a graduating student who has distinguished himself or herself as a varsity athlete and scholar.

Senior Marshals

Senior marshals are outstanding students of the senior class in good academic standing who have a record of contributing to their class, their school and/or their community and represent what it means to be a Columbian. Senior marshals lead their class into Class Day ceremonies and are distinguished by a gold aiguillette that adorns their robe. Senior marshal honorees have been nominated to represent their class by a member of the Columbia University community.
