HENLEY-ON-THAMES, OXFORDSHIRE, U.K. – Columbia lightweight rowing's magical season will continue for at least one more day. The Lions' varsity eight came up with a thrilling victory over Hobart College in the quarterfinals of the Temple Challenge Cup on Friday.

It ties the semi-final appearance of the 1929 lightweight crews, which is the furthest a lightweight crew has ever advanced at the prestigious event.

Columbia will face Université de Lyon (France) in the semifinals tomorrow at 4:10 p.m. local time (11:10 EDT).

Hobart stumbled off the blocks, losing its line and steered towards the Lions' lane. However, Columbia was only able to open a four-seat lead, which they held until the halfway point of the race. The Lions then inched out and extended the margin to a length until a push by Hobart nearly drew the teams even. From there, Columbia showed its grit by pulling away as both teams sprinted to the finish and taking the victory by 3/4 of a length.
