Ivy League

NEW YORK - The 2018 Ivy League Outdoor Heptagonal Championships begin Saturday at Franklin Field in Philadelphia, as the Columbia track & field teams look to strive for Ancient Eight supremacy over the weekend.

Along with many of the prelim events, two track events will have finals on day one with the men's and women's 10,000m, along with eight field events, including the men's pole vault and women's long jump. A majority of the finals take place on the second day, where Columbia will look to several repeat Championship performances.

The men's and women's teams return three champions from season ago at Outdoor Heps. Last year at Yale, Ryan Thomas took the tape in the men's 5,000m run, an event in which Columbia enters with the top three performers this year. Brian Zabilski is the top Ivy runner so far in the 5K, clocking a 13:59.18 during the Virginia Challenge. The performance by Zabilski was just better than Kenny Vasbinder, the Ivy League Indoor champion at that distance, who ran 14:01.37, and Thomas, who has a 14:04.21 next to his name.

The women have two returning champions from the 2017 edition of the Outdoor Heps, led by Akua Obeng-Akrofi and Sarah Hardie. Obeng-Akrofi is the top 400m runner in the conference this season with a 52.75 from the Florida Relays, while Hardie comes in with the third best time in the 800m, an event she won last year, and the fourth best performance in the 1,500m. Nell Crosby has another top Ivy League time this year in the 3,000m steeplechase at 10:03.28, and looks to improve on her second place effort last year at Yale.
