JERUSALEM — Rising junior Emily Surloff of the Columbia women’s basketball team is competing on Team USA at the 20th World Maccabiah Games in Israel. The team began play in the preliminary round on Sunday.
Team USA is competing against Russia, Israel and Australia in the open women’s basketball division. Surloff helped her country to a 101-71 victory over Russia on Sunday. Israel narrowly defeated Team USA, 68-62, on Monday. The third and final game of the preliminary round is scheduled for Wednesday against Australia at 7:30 p.m. local time (12:30 p.m. EDT).
Through two games, Team USA sits in second place in the four-team standing table. All four teams will advance to the semifinal round on Friday. The No. 1 seed will face the No. 4 seed and the No. 2 seed will face the No. 3 seed. The winner of each semifinal advances to the gold-medal game on Sunday. The two remaining teams will play for the bronze on Sunday.
The Maccabiah Games are the world’s third-largest international sporting event and attracts elite Jewish athletes from around the world. The Maccabiah Games in 2017 are comprised of 9,000 athletes from 80 countries. The Games provide Jewish athletes the opportunity to come to Israel and compete at an elite level while also building connections with their teammates, competitors and the people of Israel.
Surloff joins Jen Berkowitz of Yale and Hayley Isenberg of Harvard as the three Ivy League representatives on Team USA. Other members include: Tara Berger of Wesleyan University; Allison Chernow of Emory University; Drew Edelman of UC Santa Barbara; Page Fecske of Pepperdine; Hannah Fox of Amherst College; Leah Purvis of Miami (OH); Lauren Rothfeld of Salisbury University; Maria Shtikel of Seattle University; and Allison Sifen of Bowdoin College. Sherry Levin of Worcester Academy is the head coach. Jennifer Cosgrove of Fordham is the assistant coach.
