NEW YORK—For the first time in its 25-year history, ESPN College Gameday will broadcast live in New York City. The show will originate live from Times Square (Parallel with Seventh Avenue between 43rd and 44th Streets) from 9 a.m.-noon. Admission is free.

Columbia’s presence will be felt at the ESPN Gameday event as Roar-ee the Lion and Columbia’s cheerleaders will represent the Lions at the gathering. Following the show, Lions fans can take a combination of the A, C or 1 Trains up to Robert K. Kraft Field at Lawrence A. Wien Stadium (220th & Broadway Avenue) for Columbia’s 1 p.m. kickoff against Georgetown, where the Lions will attempt to start a season at 2-0 for the first time since 2006. The contest will be televised live on SNY and on the Ivy League Network.

ESPN reporter Tom Rinaldi was on-hand during Columbia’s season opener against Wagner last Saturday. Rinaldi was conducting interviews and collecting footage for a story on how fans follow college football in New York City. That segment is scheduled to air sometime during the show Saturday morning.

“New York City is a melting pot of college football fans and the heartbeat of America,” ESPN Vice President of Production Lee Fitting said. “Thousands of alumni gather in the city each fall on Saturday to root on their school and we are bringing College Gameday to New York for them! We want every alumni base and college football fan near and far to join us in Times Square to provide the celebratory, festive atmosphere that is synonymous with the show.”

For fans watching on television, the backdrop of the main set will face 44th Street. The set will be constructed starting late on Thursday, Sept. 21, and be taken down immediately after the show ends.
