NEW YORK – The Columbia track & field teams have two meets scheduled for this weekend, with the Gotham Cup taking place Friday in Staten Island, followed by a tri-meet with Dartmouth and Yale on Saturday in Hanover, New Hampshire.
The two meets are the second and third outings of the calendar year, as the Lions opened the indoor schedule in December at the Metro Season Opener before competing in the Great Dane Classic last week.
Last week at the Great Dane Classic, the women's squad posted a number of top-10 finishes, with a pair coming from Akua Obeng-Akrofi. The senior took third in the 500m at 1:12.90, then helped the 4x400m relay team to a fourth-place finish alongside Aminat Iriafen, Iman Sule, and McKenzie Sup.
The field events saw Alexis Turley-Young claim fourth in the long jump at 5.73m (18-9.75) with Maryam Hassan close behind in sixth at 5.59m (18-4.25). In the high jump, rookie Grace Campbell finished fifth, clearing 1.65m (5-5) on the day.
On the men's side, an exciting finish took place in the pole vault with Robert O'Brien. The junior edged UConn's Ian Bergere in a jump-off to clear 4.95m (15-9) and take the title.
A few of the middle distance and distance runners for Columbia are scheduled to compete for the first time this winter up at Dartmouth, as Nell Crosby and Libby Kokes of the Ivy League Champion Cross Country squad are both entered in events.
