PRINCETON, N.J. – Ten Columbia student-athletes were among 80 men and women to earn All-Ivy League Academic honors in winter sports, the league office announced.
Those honored were starters or key reserves on an officially recognized varsity team with 3.0 or better cumulative grade point averages. Each institution nominated five men and women from its eligible student-athletes.
Three-year starter Ben Nwachukwu represented the men's basketball team after concluding his senior season at Levien Gym as the program's record holder in games played (110). A first team Academic All-District by CoSIDA/ESPN The Magazine, Nwachukwu was also a two-time Ivy Player of the Week during his career.
A pair of women's basketball players were also selected to the team – fellow All-Ivy League members Danielle Browne and Michele Gage. Each had stellar seasons in helping the Lions to a 7-7 Ivy League mark, a three-game improvement over the previous season and Columbia's best-ever league record.
Browne averaged 10.0 points, 4.1 assists, 3.6 rebounds and 2.0 steals per game while Gage led the team with 12.3 points per game and added 5.4 rebounds per game. Gage also finished with 61 three-pointers on the season, a new school record.
The Lions' swimming and diving teams were well-represented with two women and one man making the squad. Teammates Hannah Galey and Amy Krakauer join counterpart Kevin Wakefield.
Galey was an All-Ivy performer in five events for Columbia while Krakauer also earned All-Ivy accolades in the 100 breast, breaking Columbia's oldest school record in the event.
Wakefield was an All-Ivy Leaguer in the 200 free and a member of the Lions' 800-free relay that earned All-Ivy recognition.
Liam Boylan-Pett, a two-time Ivy League champion in the mile, is track and field's representative on the list after his final winter season on Morningside Heights.
Three All-American fencers round out Columbia's list – 2008 bronze medalists Emily Jacobson (women's sabre) and Kurt Getz (men's foil) join 2008 NCAA champion Jeff Spear (men's sabre).
Jacobson closes her stellar career as a four-time first team All-American while Getz, a sophomore, earned his second consecutive first team All-American award.
Also a sophomore, Spear enjoyed a breakout year after earning second team All-Ivy honors in his first year. The Wynantskill, N.Y. native went 18-5 at the NCAA Championships, bringing home Columbia's first men's NCAA championship since 2001.
