football

inducted October 2, 2008

A two-sport athlete at Columbia, Russ Warren competed in both football and baseball. Having excelled on the football field, Warren has been able to keep his passion for the sport alive as he currently serves as the team physician for the New York Giants.

Warren was one of the Ivy League’s leading running backs. A bruising ball carrier, he keyed a strong Columbia offense which carried the 1961 Lions to their only Ivy League football championship.

Warren garnered first team All-Ivy League honors in 1961, after the Lions’ championship season. At one point during the 1961 season, he was the nation’s third-leading punter with a 44.1 average. He also tied the all-time Ivy League mark for punting with a 40.9 average. His leadership and skill did not go unnoticed, as his teammates voted him the team’s Most Valuable Player.

The co-founder and past chairman of the board of Professional Sports Care Management, Inc. Regarded as one of medicine’s leading authorities on injuries of the shoulder, he is a surgeon-in-chief emeritus of the Hospital for Special Surgery, and is a professor of orthopedics at Weill-Cornell Medical College in New York.

Warren has remained actively involved in the Columbia community, most recently serving on the Columbia Campaign for Athletics Leadership Committee.
