NEW YORK – The Columbia archery team had a fantastic showing at the East Regional portion of the 2012 U.S. Indoor National Championships, March 9 and 10 at James Madison University in Harrisonburg, Va. The recurve team of Sarah Chai
, Sarah Bernstein
and Grace Kim
won gold in the team competition for the second straight year, with a combined total of 3,219 points. Chai also took the individual title in the event in a tough region, and had the highest overall score in the nation.
The Indoor Nationals is one of the most important events for the team this year as the archers' score from this tournament will be combined with their scores at the United States Intercollegiate Archery Championships (USIAC) later this spring to determine who will earn All-America recognition.
"I'm very happy with the performance of the team," head coach Derek Davis
said. "This was a great end to our indoor season and will send us into our outdoor season with confidence."
Chai led the way, scoring 555 points on both days of the event to finish the weekend with a score of 1,110, the best in the region and the top overall score in the country. First-year Sarah Bernstein
finished third in the region with the sixth highest total in the nation, hitting a final score of 1,065. First-year Grace Kim
rounded out the top three, coming in fourth in the East Region and 10th nationally, with a combined score of 1,044.
The Lions also did well in the compound division, as senior Sydney Shaefer
finished third in the region individually, and the compound squad of Shaefer, Mary Quien
and Gladys Velez-Caicedo
came in third overall in the East.
Shaefer led the way for Columbia, shooting 551 and 557 to finish with a combined score of 1,108. It was the third highest individual total in the East, and the 13th-ranked score in the country. Quien finished seventh in the region with a two-day total of 1,097 points, while Velez-Caicedo came in with a score fo 1,016, putting the team score at 3,221.
