NEW YORK – For the second time in three years, the Columbia women’s basketball team was honored at the 91st Annual Varsity C Celebration on Tuesday, May 1, as the Lions took home the fourth annual Lions Cup trophy, which awarded to the Columbia intercollegiate athletics program that most exemplifies success on and off the field of play.

The Lions Cup is a competitive event for all Columbia University varsity sports programs that is a means by which student athletes can compete on behalf of their varsity sport program for points in various categories. Student athletes are able to take ownership of their academic, athletic, personal and social responsibilities and reinforce the Department’s goals of achieving and sustaining quality and excellence.

The women’s basketball team led the way for the department in team spirit, collecting 2,570 points based on attendance at athletic events throughout the school year. It was a full 1,600 points ahead of their nearest competitors, the lacrosse team, who had 980 spirit points. The Lions also had the second-best total in community service, with 1,700 points, just behind men’s squash, who led the way with 2,200 points.

Overall, the women’s basketball team accumulated 5,060 points to beat men’s squash, with 2,940 points, and third place field hockey, with 2,875 points.
