NEW YORK – The Columbia cross country and track & field program has bolstered its coaching staff with one of the premier distance runners in the nation. Nicole Blood
, a nine-time All-American and current professional distance runner for Nike, will the Lions’ staff as an assistant coach starting in July.
”I am thrilled to have Nicole join our staff,” Columbia Director of Cross Country and Track & Field Willy Wood said. “She will bring such an amazing level of competitive experience to our women’s distance program. We are all very much looking forward to her arrival here and are confident that her impact will be immense.”
Blood will work primarily with Columbia’s women’s distance runners. She will replace departing assistant coach Zach Richard, who helped guide the women’s distance program back to the top of the Ivy League over the last four years.
The nine-time All-American, three-time Academic All-American and four-time Pac-10 champion was one of the most decorated female student-athletes in Oregon history. From 2006-10, Blood was one of the nation’s top collegiate distance runners with many impressive performances at the NCAA Championships. She had a pair of top-3 finishes in the outdoor 5,000m (second in 2009, third in 2010), a third-place finish in the outdoor 10,000m in 2010, two top-10 showings in the indoor 3,000m (sixth in 2009, fifth in 2010) and a pair of top-10 finishes at the NCAA Cross Country Championships (eighth in 2007,10th in 2008).
She was also a scholar in the classroom, garnering ESPN the Magazine Academic All-America honors in 2008 (third team), 2009 (second team) and 2010 (second team).
Blood has been sponsored by Nike and competed at an elite professional level in U.S. track & field since 2010. She has also represented the New Jersey-New York Track Club since 2011, competing in the 1,500m, the mile, 3,000m, 5,000m and 10,000m. Columbia alumni Delilah DiCrescenzo and Liam Boylan-Pett also compete for the New Jersey-New York Track Club. Blood represented the Oregon Track Club in 2010.
She earned her bachelor of arts degree in news/editorial journalism from the University of Oregon in 2010 and has worked as a freelance writer for Running Times. Blood has also been a health and fitness coach at Pro-Activity.
