KINGSTON, Jamaica – Columbia rising senior Leighton Spencer continued his dominance as a one of the top distance runners in Jamaica this past weekend, taking the men’s 5,000m and 10,000m crowns at the 2012 Jamaica Amateur Athletic Association National Senior Trials.

Spencer defended his 2011 title in the 5,000m with a stellar performance on Friday at National Stadium in Kingston, Jamaica. His winning time of 15:32.02 was over 50 seconds better than his time from last year’s race (16:22.12). On Sunday, Spencer won the 10,000m with a time of 33:54.60.

Spencer is coming off a great 2012 track season. During the indoor season, he set career bests in the indoor mile (4:19.54 at Great Dane Classic) and the 3,000m (8:19.83, Millrose Collegiate Invitational). Spencer set new personal records at Princeton during the outdoor season, clocking a 14:20.13 in the 5,000m at the Larry Ellis Invitational and a 30:09.25 in the 10,000, at the Sam Howell Invitational.

***UPDATE: Spencer was selected to represent Jamaica at the NACAC U-23 Championships, which will be held July 6-8 in Guanajuato, Mexico. ***
