NEW YORK - Columbia assistant coach Koby Altman recently accepted a position with the Cleveland Cavaliers as the Manager of Pro Player Personnel. Altman was the head coach of Columbia's developmental basketball team, a lead recruiter and assisted with practice plans while working under head coach Kyle Smith at Columbia.

"Working for Kyle Smith at Columbia was a truly special experience for me," Altman said. "Coach Smith gave me tremendous room to grow as a basketball coach in my two years working with him. He also was instrumental in helping me land this extraordinary professional opportunity. The men's basketball program at Columbia us under the guidance of a great leader."

With the Cavaliers, Altman will be working under Cleveland general manager Chris Grant, who played at the University of San Diego while Kyle Smith was an assistant coach with the Toreros. Altman will be tasked with scouting NBA, minor league and international professional players for the purposes of free agency and trade acquisitions.

During the summer of 2010, Altman served as the operations manager for USA Basketball’s Under-17 team at the inaugural FIBA U17 World Championship in Hamburg, Germany. That 17-and-under squad won the first gold medal to ever be awarded for that age group.

In 2009, Altman also assisted with Team USA’s 19-and-under team in the FIBA U19 World Championship in Auckland, New Zealand. That USA Basketball squad captured the first gold medal in that age group since 1991.
