FAIRFIELD, Conn. - The Columbia men's soccer team and Sacred Heart played a close, scoreless match for the first 77 minutes Sunday, before the Pioneers' Jamal Vinson notched the game's lone goal to defeat the Lions, 1-0.

After the opening 30 minutes passed with neither team threatening, both Columbia and Sacred Heart recorded scoring chances. The Pioneers had the first opportunity, as Marcello Castro launched a shot that was saved by the Columbia goalkeeper Michael Attal.

The Lions followed with an opportunity of their own to get on the bored just minutes later with Nick Scott driving a shot just wide of the goal. Sacred Heart closed out the opening stanza with one last opportunity. With just under five minutes before the intermission, Castro drove a long shot wide of the Columbia goal.

In the second half, the Pioneers tallied a pair of shots in the 63rd minutes that Columbia was able to block away from the net. Four minutes after the barrage of shots, Columbia lost Kyle Culbertson for the remainder of the contest when he was issued his second yellow card.

The Lions rallied though, with Frederick Elliot, and Brendan O'Hearn each putting shots on net that Tucker Hackett was forced to save for Sacred Heart.

The inability to get the ball past Hackett would cost Columbia, as the Pioneers would break through in the 78th minute. Vinson was able to go up and head a ball into the goal from an Evan Kennedy throw in to give the Pioneers the game's only score.

Sacred Heart held the edge in shots, 9-5, while Columbia was whistled for 18 fouls to the Pioneers' 11. 

The Lions will look to right the ship Wednesday, as Manhattan visits the Columbia Soccer Stadium for a 7 p.m. matchup.
