NEW YORK - The Columbia University volleyball team will look
to remain in the win column this weekend as the Lions travel to the Delaware
Invitational hosted by the University of Delaware at the Bob Carpenter Center.
Columbia (1-2) opened the 2012 season last weekend at the University
of Central Florida Classic in Orlando by dropping 3-0 and 3-1 losses to host
UCF and Liberty before bouncing back with a 3-0 sweep over Jacksonville.
The Lions are scheduled to play three matches this weekend
at Delaware, beginning with a showdown with the Blue Hens at 12 p.m. on Friday.
Next, Columbia will face Xavier at 5 p.m. on Friday and will conclude with a
4:30 showdown against Texas A&M on Saturday.
Delaware, the two-time defending Colonial Athletic
Association Champions, enters the tournament with a 1-4 mark after coming off a
pair of 3-0 losses to Western Kentucky and Virginia and a 3-1 victory over
Lehigh at the Holiday Inn Jefferson Cup in Charlottesville, Va. Columbia and
Delaware hold an even 1-1 all-time record against each other, with the Lions
taking the most recent contest in 2000 with a 3-0 score.
Xavier is currently 5-3 this season after posting a 3-2
victory over Miami in the Xavier Tournament last Tuesday. Friday's contest will
be only the second meeting between the two teams, with Xavier holding the
advantage after defeating the Lions 3-0 in 2002.
A new opponent for the Lions to challenge, Texas A&M is
currently 5-1 and enters the tournament receiving votes in the AVCA poll. The
Aggies most recently swept the Yale Classic with a 3-1 victory over Yale and a
pair of 3-0 victories over American and Stony Brook.
